I actually used my phone's headphone jack for something!

I was scheduled for a video call this morning, and had my headphones (with in-line microphone) plugged in to my laptop for better audio. Then the person called me on my phone instead. Rather than having to fumble around for a bluetooth headset, I plugged my headphones into my phone and took the call.

I’ve dabbled with Bluetooth for 5-6 years for car audio and work conference calls, but I keep coming back to wired headphones for anything important.

I mean, call quality on a cell (or even Voip, at times) is already spotty to begin with. BT just adds one more layer of suck.

It’s the only modern tech that hasn’t grown on me at all. I think I hate it more now than when I started ;)

Bluetooth is never my first choice.

I use bluetooth to play music/gps nav in the car from phone 99% of the time with the headphone jack only as a backup. But flying on planes, I most certainly need the headphone jack 100% of the time. If I want to use the seatback screen, there is no bluetooth option and then switching to my phone is just easier to use the same headphones. I don’t think I would ever switch to bluetooth headphones since I already have nice wired ones that I doubt I will ever replace. Phones without headphone jacks still just seem ridiculous to me. But for the majority of people it does make sense since wireless headphones are more convenient.

I like my wired headphones. I’m super glad that Samsung made the decision to keep them, at least for now.

I love my bluetooth headphones at the gym and I vastly prefer having it in the car so I don’t have to fumble with a cord every time I want to listen to music. I like using my bluetooth headset for longer calls on my cell phone so I don’t have to hold my phone up to my head. But bluetooth’s not for everything.

When joining video conferences away from the office, as was the plan today, I like to use unobtrusive earbuds so there’s not a big honking headset on my head in the video, but I can hear things clearly and be heard. I once tested out pairing my nice Plantronics bluetooth headset to my computer for video calls but the quality of my voice was noticeably worse than my wired earbuds and I want to be heard clearly.

A couple random thoughts on sound quality:

Most modern cell phones is they have much better built-in noise canceling mics than what’s in headsets, and cars’ built-in speakerphones are even worse. I once called my wife when she was riding in a car and I didn’t even know she was in a car until she mentioned it because she was holding her phone up to her head to talk and the noise canceling was that good. And it’s not even a fancy phone, it’s a Moto G5+.

I get startled when I get an HD voice call. I’m on T-Mobile which isn’t very popular around here and I don’t know if they support HD voice with other carriers (Verizon and AT&T have an HD voice agreement in place). My townhouse is impossible for delivery drivers to find because the front doors of the units don’t face the road and there’s no signage on the side that does face the road, and recently a Chinese delivery guy called me trying to find my place. It came through so clear I was like, WHAT’S GOING ON HERE, until I realized he probably also had T-Mobile.

When I fly I use my Yoga Tab 2 and Sony noise canceling wired earbuds. It’s perfect for propping up on the tray table. I used to always frantically torrent a few movies before a flight but lately I’ve been using Netflix’s download feature since I can point the downloads to the SD card.

I like my S7 Edge even though I had to spend a bunch of time de-bloatifying it and all the extra Samsung software features (some of which I actually like!) create more jankiness than something a Pixel, OnePlus or Moto.

TBH I don’t love the two sizes of the S8 and S9 series. The regular ones are skinnier than I like and my dad just got an S9+ which is a little too big for me to one-hand. He has smaller hands than me so is a two hand phone user anyway but I one-hand my S7E.

My wife loves her headphone jack so much that she recently chose a 6S over an 8.

I always wish the tray table was higher. I hate having to stare at my lap to watch movies usually. And it is much worse if the person in front tilts the seat back. I have a Nexus 7 that I use and watch downloaded amazon shows/movies. Its just always so much easier to use the plane screens if they work and have decent stuff to watch. American Airlines seems to get quite a few new releases that arent on amazon/netflix so its neat to see those.

The plane screens are definitely at a better eye level but the quality is so much lower than something downloaded to my 10" tablet that I tend to go for the tablet. I did like having the screens on my ~5-6 hour flights to and from St. Martin for my honeymoon though, more to choose from and I didn’t have to pre-download everything. Also not every plane has the screens.

I have giant hands so the S9 plus is just right.

This is the shit. It effortlessly drives my Mee Pinnacle P1s when I’m out running or my Grado Statements when relaxing at home. Everybody I talk to through this says the mic is fine. It has power to drive everything and while rated for six hours I’ve used it for longer when on big distance flights. Most Bluetooth headphones used a crap codes and it’s obvious when comparing them back to back.
